Winged Everlasting (Ammobium alatum)
Seed grown by Lightning Hollows here in the Hunter Valley, NSW.
Description:
Papery textured white blooms with yellow centres on tall, stiff stems (similar to Statice).
Perfect for wedding work as they hold up out of water for installations, boutonnieres and bridal bouquets.
Great for fresh or dry arrangements.
Native short-lived perennial (annual in very cold areas).
Seed count: 100+
Site: full sun
Height: 60-150cm (overwintered plants will be much taller than Spring sown plants).
Sowing method: Sow in Autumn or Spring. Raise seedlings or sow direct. Avoid over watering as prone to root rot.
Sowing depth: 0-1mm (light required for germination).
Spacing: 20-30cm
Days to germination: 4-8 days
Days to maturity: approx. 80 days
Support: Not required but you could corral with twine or use netting. Autumn sown plants will be much taller so may need support where as Spring sown plants shouldn’t require any.
Yield: Approx. 10+ stems per plant each season.
Cut and come again: keep cutting/deadheading for blooms early-Spring to Autumn.
Vase life: 7-10 days if used fresh. Hang upside down to dry so that stems remain straight.
Harvest stage: Ideally after the first flower has fully opened and you can see it’s yellow centre but before all the rest have fully opened. Flowers will continue to open both in the vase if used fresh, or as they dry.
