Description:

  • Tall, delicate stems covered in tiny, bright blue blooms.

  • Different to the biennial, short, pale blue forget-me-not.

  • Loved by both event and retail florists.

  • Cold-hardy annual so prefers cool growing conditions.

  • Prolific self-seeder (hence the name).

Seed count: 50+

Site: full sun to part shade

Height: 40-60cm

Sowing method: Sow in Autumn, Winter (only in temperate/sub-tropical areas) and Spring. Frost hardy. Direct sow or raise seedlings. (NOTE: You can also try for an Autumn flush by sowing in late-Spring to early-Summer. Part-shade would be best for this since they prefer cooler growing conditions).

Sowing depth:5mm (darkness required for germination).

Spacing: 25-40cm (when given more space, plants will produce more stems)

Days to germination: 7-14 days

Days to maturity: approx. 80 days

Support: Not required but you could corral with twine.

Yield: 5-7 stems per plant (10+ if plant spacing is generous).

Successions: At least 3 for ongoing blooms through Spring. The bloom window for each succession is approx. 3-4 weeks depending on temperatures and weather.

Vase life: Approx. 7 days. For event work, they will hold up out of water for a few hours.

Harvest stage: When most of the flowers on the stem are open or even when some seed has started to set. If harvested when blooms are still in bud, the stems will droop.
