Foxglove Dalmatian Peach (Digitalis purpurea)

$6.50
Sold Out

Description:

  • First year flowering (FYF) hybrid so unlike traditional Foxgloves, Dalmatian can be grown as an annual.

  • Frost hardy and easy to grow.

  • Medium water needs but avoid overhead watering if possible as blossoms mark easily.

Seed count: 25 seeds

Site: Full sun - light shade

Height: 40-60cm (first main bloom is larger and following side shoots are smaller).

Sowing method: Raise seedlings in Autumn. Frost hardy. Can be direct sown but seeds are tiny and require light for germination so can be hardy to keep moist when direct sowing.

Sowing depth: 0mm (light required for germination).

Spacing: 20-30cm for cut flower production (this is a more compact variety and I prefer to plant tight to help the soil retain moisture).

Days to germination: 14-21 days @ approx. 18-21 degrees.

Days to maturity: approx. 120 days

Support: Not required but you could net. As this is a more compact Digitalis, I haven’t had any issues with stems snapping or blowing over so I don’t give them support.

Yield: Will send up 1 large stem followed by up 6-8 smaller side shoots (still a great size for bouquets).

Successions: One planting is most common since plants send up side shoots after initial flush however you could do more than one, especially if in a warm area as the plants will get tired more quickly.

Vase life: 6-8 days.

Harvest stage: Harvest when just a few bottom blossoms are open, before the bees pollinate the flowers.
